Multnomah University seeks a leader, strategic thinker, and community builder to join the executive team as a vice president of finance & administration, CFO.

In this role, you will assist the university in successfully completing its mission by strategically exercising leadership over the financial, investment, operational, and contractual matters of the institution. You will be responsible for developing the overall financial strategy of the university and will empower your team members to work collaboratively to achieve lofty goals through vision casting, training, and intentional mentorship.

The right candidate will demonstrate a strong proficiency with analytical decision making and reporting, will be financially savvy and will serve as a trusted advisor to the President and Board of Trustees. Primary Responsibilities: Assisting the president with the overall leadership of the university. Responsibility for strategically influential and operationally effective financial and business operations programs supporting the university’s mission and strategic plan. The VP leads all university financial analyses and processes, finance team, business services, information technology, human resources/student employment, legal, risk management, campus support services. Also leads strategic initiatives as requested by the President.

Institutional Responsibilities (20%)

Objective: Support the institution and the president in the overall leadership of the school and serve as a member of the senior administrative team.

  • Support Multnomah’s mission
  • Serve as Multnomah’s Vice President of Finance & Administration, Chief Financial Officer and Registered Agent.
  • Lead strategic initiatives as requested by the President.
  • Serve on the Finance Committees of the Board of Trustees.
  • Prepare and submit an annual budget for all departments for which he/she has oversight according to procedures and deadlines established by the business office.
  • Serve on President’s Cabinet and regularly attend meetings, and lead these meetings in the President’s absence
  • Participate in and help lead institutional and departmental strategic planning.
  • Meet approximately twice a month with the President for strategic updating and communication.
  • Serve on committees and complete special projects as requested by the President.
  • Represent Multnomah to outside constituencies as appropriate.

Financial Responsibilities (50%)

Objective: Strategically lead and oversee the financial health of the institution, ensuring proper controls and policies are carried out, providing appropriate information to the president and board.

  • Strategic Finance: strategic business analysis, communication and process for added value decision making, including but not limited to development and monitoring of long-range plans, forecasts and budgets, variance analysis, cash flow forecasting and management, cost accounting and analysis, scenario-based planning and forecasting, strategic investment decision support, volatility and risk-based predictive modeling
  • Supervise the preparation of the annual budget to be submitted to the President and the Finance Committee for approval by the entire Board of Trustees at the annual spring Board of Trustees meeting.
  • Assist the Vice Presidents in the annual budget-making process.
  • Ensure that Multnomah operates within its annual budget by:
    • Ensuring adequate controls to safeguard the assets of the institution.
    • Maintaining the integrity of donor-restricted gifts to the institution.
    • Recommending to the President any mid-year adjustments necessary to maintain a balanced budget.
  • Oversee the completion of an annual audit by a reputable outside auditor.
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager with bankers and investment fund managers.
  • Supply the President, the Finance, Investment, and Audit Committee, and the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees with quarterly and annual financial reports within a reasonable time.
  • Furnish the president, president’s cabinet, board, faculty, and staff committees with such financial information deemed necessary for informed decision-making.
  • Ensure the provision of the necessary information for all appropriate governmental and regulatory agencies by their respective deadlines.
  • In collaboration with president’s cabinet, recommend annually the new tuition and fee rates along with the rental rates for campus housing.
  • Provide final review for the financial component of new program proposals.
  • Report regularly to the Finance Committee on the status of the institution’s invested funds and recommend strategies for institutional investment. Arrange an annual meeting between the Finance Committee and the professional investment fund managers.

Administrative Responsibilities (30%)

Objective: Provide leadership and general oversight to the Business Office, Campus Support Services, IT, and Human Resources and provide financial and operational input with other academic and administrative departments.

  • Supervise the Controller, ensuring best practices
  • Supervise the Director of Information Technology, ensuring technology is both effective and efficient.
  • Supervise the Executive Director of Facilities Operations, ensuring proper care and service campus wide for facilities, maintenance, and grounds; both for employees and for students.
  • Supervise the Director of Human Resources, ensuring compliance with federal regulations, equity with employee policies and benefits and service to all employees, including student employees.
  • Work with the campus food service vendor and oversee the negotiation of the institution’s contract with our external food service company.
  • Assist the President in other projects as they may require.
  • Act as the liaison with outside counsel for all legal matters related to the University.


Job-specific Requirements:

  • Earned at least a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS), preferably in business/accounting.
  • Be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
  • Have at least five years of work experience in finance and operations. Preference will be given to an applicant with experience in the not-for-profit or educational area.
  • Have proven strategic leadership, management, and administrative skills.
